Students will meet these objectives through the use of their Process Journal, Artwork, and Class Critiques.
Students will be exposed to a variety of media with a focus on techniques, process verbs, and theme development such as: controlled and uncontrolled areas within an artwork, life / figure studies, exaggerated viewpoints, extreme Mark Making, patterning, etc. The students will also look at different genres of art: while focusing on the Key Concepts, Related Concepts, Approaches to Learning, and Global Contexts of the MYPIB Program.
Key Concepts: Aesthetics, Identity, Change, and Communication
Related Concepts: Audience, Boundaries, Composition, Expression, Genre, Innovation, Interpretation, Narrative, Presentation, Representation, Style, and Visual Culture
Approaches to Learning: Thinking Skills, Social Skills, Communication Skills, Self-Management Skills, and Research Skills
Global Context: Identities and Relationship; Orientation in Space and Time; Personal and Cultural Expression; Scientific and Technical Innovation; Globalization and Sustainability; and Fairness and Development
Process Journal:
This Journal will become the student’s text book over the course of the year. The Journal will be used to: critique other artist, research techniques, investigate art through various cultures, societies, and history, plan and research projects, practice techniques, assess their own work, take notes, and develop personal voice. The Process Journal becomes the prep work for the upcoming project, as well, as a place to reflect during the process of creating, as well as at the end of the project.
Artwork:
The assignments in the Intermediate Art course are designed to give the students a loose structure to help build ideas and personal voice, but at the same time allow the students to experiment and build technique and skill.
Critiques:
Students will participate in class critiques at the end of each project. The Critiques will include large whole class discussions, small student led discussions, and written critiques. Students will learn to read artwork as a complex text using ‘The Critical Method’. Students will critique work of other artist, students, and personal artworks.
The students will produce about three Process Journals, and Artworks per quarter. The students will also participate in Class Critiques and Self Assessments held at the end of each project.
3 projects – Students will have about 7 class periods per project.
3 process journals – These are due on the first day of each new project. This
is where the students will research and prepare their ideas.
3 quick assignments – These are also done on the first day of each project. These are designed to allow the student the chance to experiment with different materials, techniques, and ways of working.
3 class critiques – These are done on the last day of the project. Students must earn checks during the discussion which will later translate into a grade.
Quarter 1 – focus on mixed media with unusual approaches / materials.
Quarter 2 – figure work. Students work with: the skeleton, gestures, blocking in highlights and shadows, and portraits.
Quarter 3 – The class will focus on the art elements and principles of design (examples: exaggerated viewpoint, extreme mark making, and pattern)
Quarter 4 – The student will develop a mini concentration (theme)
Classes will be graded with the attached Assessment Criteria. The breakdown is as follows:
**All students will be required to keep a portfolio of their artwork in order to meet CMS proficiency levels.
