Process Journal Criteria for IB
Each page should be full, and contain both written and visual content. There should be consideration to the visual layout of each page. Pages should be dated with all sources cited. There should be a minimum of 6 required items each journal.
1. Artist Critique (prepare): of an artist / artwork relating to current topic under investigation (use handout on ‘A Critical Method’ as a guide), include a picture or sketch of the artwork being discussed.
Prompt: Using ‘A Critical Method ‘of describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate; critique a piece of Art, arguing the success or failure of the Artwork. Draw comparisons to your own personal work and what you are trying to achieve
Format: Minimum of one page in your Process Journal / sketchbook (hand written and legible)
Include the following:
Photograph of the artwork
The photograph should be no larger than 3 x 4 inches. Beneath the photograph include the Artist name, year of completion, and the medium of the artwork.

Describe
Describe what is taking place within the artwork.
Paragraph 2
Analyze
Analyze the Art elements (color, value, texture, line, shape, and space) and Principles of Design (balance, emphasis / contrast, movement / rhythm, repetition / pattern, and proportion / perspective) within the artwork
Paragraph 3
Interpret
Interpret the meaning or the artist intent within the work. Back your interpretation with facts you read from the artwork.
Paragraph 4
Evaluate
Evaluate the success or failure of the artwork through: Imitationalism (realistic qualities within the artwork)
Formalism (composition, use of art elements, and use of media)
Emotionalism (the emotional response the viewer has toward the artwork)
Support your evaluation with facts you read from the artwork.
Paragraph 5
Connections
Draw connections from the work chosen to your upcoming project.

This should be written along the top or bottom edge of the page.

Select artworks from different cultural context, time periods, and that use different media (remember that these artworks should have connections to each other as well connect to your own work. Start with artworks that have been influential to you.)

4. Project Planning and experimentation with Materials (rehearse): this should include a minimum of 5 compositional sketches, as well as testing/ experimentation of materials. You can also include teacher and peer feedback on these pages. (IB student should document work in process for the process portfolio.) minimum of 2 pages

- A photograph of the artwork (this will let me know that you are keeping a digital file of your work), or a very detailed drawing of the artwork.
- Title of the artwork, and date of completion.
- Notes on any feedback received during the production of the piece. This would include feedback from your teacher and peers. Include your response or adjustments made within the artwork, based off the feedback, and explain how this helped you progress. (This information can be included with your planning pages, if that will be easier).
- Analyze the Art elements and Principles of design within the artwork. (Talk about composition, use of color, line, texture, space, etc…) Is there anything you would change or do differently?
- Explain the meaning or intent behind the artwork, and how it relates to your research or themed work.
