The Beginning level course is a foundation course set up to meet the North Carolina essential standards, as well as the objectives of the MYPIB program. North Carolina standards include three strands: Visual Literacy, Contextual Relevancy, and Critical Response, that work cohesively with the MYPIB objectives: Knowing and Understanding, Developing Skills, Thinking Creatively, and Responding. Students will meet these objectives through the use of their Process Journal, Artwork, and Class Critiques.
Students will be exposed to Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Sculpture, and Printmaking using a variety of media which will include the following: pencil, pen and ink, collage, found object sculpture, color pencil, oil pastel, acrylic paint, watercolor, chalk pastel, charcoal, mixed media, and printmaking. The students will also look at different genres of art: still life, animals/ insects, abstraction, botany, landscape, architectural studies, portraits, illustrations, and narrative while focusing on the Key Concepts, Related Concepts, Approaches to Learning, and Global Contexts of the MYPIB Program.

Related Concepts: Audience, Boundaries, Composition, Expression, Genre, Innovation, Interpretation, Narrative, Presentation, Representation, Style, and Visual Culture
Approaches to Learning: Thinking Skills, Social Skills, Communication Skills, Self-Management Skills, and Research Skills
Global Context: Identities and Relationship; Orientation in Space and Time; Personal and Cultural Expression; Scientific and Technical Innovation; Globalization and Sustainability; and Fairness and Development
Process Journal:
This Journal will become the student’s text book over the course of the year. The Journal will be used to: critique other artist, research techniques, investigate art through various cultures, societies, and history, plan and research projects, practice techniques, assess their own work, take notes, and develop personal voice. The Process Journal becomes the prep work for the upcoming project, as well, as a place to reflect during the process of creating, as well as at the end of the project.
Artwork:
The assignments in the Beginning Art course are designed to give the students structure and a good foundation to help build skill, but at the same time allow for personal choices and expression.
Critiques:
Students will participate in class critiques at the end of each project. The Critiques will include large whole class discussions, small student led discussions, and written critiques. Students will learn to read artwork as a complex text using ‘The Critical Method’. Students will critique work of other artist, students, and personal artworks.
The students will produce about three Process Journals, and Artworks per quarter. The students will also participate in Class Critiques and Self Assessments held at the end of each project.
Quarter 1 – Introduction of the Art Elements and Principles of Design, Pencil, and Pen & Ink
Quarter 2 – Mixed Media, Found Object Sculpture, and Colored Pencil
Quarter 3 – Oil Pastel, Acrylic Paint, and Watercolor
Quarter 4 –Chalk Pastels and Printmaking
Classes will be graded with the attached Assessment Criteria. The breakdown is as follows:
**All students will be required to keep a portfolio of their artwork in order to meet CMS proficiency levels.

- Prepare Assessments (part of the Process Journal) = 20%: Includes Artist critiques, compare and contrast of artworks, and Independent research on techniques and content, for upcoming project.
- Rehearse Assessments = 30%: Includes Project planning and sketching, experimentation with materials, practice for upcoming projects, class discussions / critiques on artwork, and self-assessments.
- Preform Assessments = 50%: Includes Final Projects (for IB seniors, this will also include any final assessments being uploaded to ibis.)
